Tunnel Woods

Tunnel Woods is another new aquisiton for the Forestry Commission within The National Forest. 34 hectares of opencast land restored for agriculture has been planted with native tree species such as oak, ash and birch. This includes two area planted by school children from across the area as part of the Woodland Trust Tree For All Project. Their aim is to plant 12 million trees across the country by 2009 - that's one for every UK child under the age of 16. A section of the existing Swainspark Wood is also part of this new community woodland.

How to get there:

Tunnel Woods is part of The National Forest. Castle and Church Gresley is the nearest town or village.

Access is by foot only. The main pedestrian access is via a public footpath off the A444 at Castle Gresley.

OS Grid Reference: SK 289 177

What's of interest

As part of their 250th Anniversay the RSA has funded much of the new planting at Castle Gresley to create a Fellows Wood within the site. Cartridge World has assisted the RSA with the creation of a Fellows Wood as part of their "Plant a Tree not a Cartridge" campaign.
