is there free parking for disabled

Anonymous, 26/Jun/2015

There are no parking exemptions for Blue Badge Holders. It is a national decision that Blue Badge Holders pay the same as everyone else at all Forestry Commission car parks. As you will no doubt be aware, the Blue Badge Scheme is an important service for people with severe mobility problems that enables badge holders to park close to where they need to go. It is not a guarantee of free parking. At all Forestry Commission sites we have an active programme of enhancement and maintenance that makes our facilities, including paths as accessible for people with disabilities as possible and we are committed to going beyond the requirements of the Equality Act 2010. At Jeskyns alone we have over 6km of surfaced track, 2km of which specifically meets BT Countryside For All Accessibility Standards. These facilities cost a lot of money to maintain and we therefore feel that it is fair and equal to have a reasonable flat parking fee that is applicable to all visitors to help contribute towards the costs. We hope you understand our position on this.

Forestry Commission Response

What a mess! Having enjoyed jeskyns for 6 years with my dogs and paid for a car parking annual pass earlier this year. I am angry about the severe reduction in grass cutting level especially in the dogs off leads zone. I can't pick up dog poo in the long grass. That's if I can find it first! The dogs can't find their balls! On what narrowed grass walkways there are we can't avoid potential conflicts between dogs, and it looks unsightly. What is the car parking charge paying for?

Due to unforeseen circumstances our contractors have run a bit behind in their grass cutting schedule, though they assure us they will back on track with all path edges cut by the end of this week. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience whislt we get this remedied and apologise for any inconvenience caused to our visitors.

I use Jeskyns to walk my dog at least once a day, often twice in the summer months. She loves it and so do I.

Because I work, I do like to walk her early in the morning, and due to the heat in the summer the late opening is great to walk her when it has cooled down a little.

Unfortunately, in the morning the gates don't open until 7am, is it possible to consider opening them at 6am in the summer months? The sun is up at approx. 4am, I know many other walkers who are there early and would appreciate the gates being opened earlier to prevent us having to park in Church Road.

Gayle, 11/Jun/2015

Thanks for your feedback Gayle. Can't make any promises but I will ask the team to consider earlier opening hours. Hope to get back to you in the next week or so.
