VIEWS WANTED ON LOCAL FORESTRY
Forestry Commission Scotland is keen to share their plans for the future direction of forestry around Dumfriesshire and would welcome feedback from local people and businesses.
A series of drop-in sessions are being held over the next few weeks for anyone interested in finding out more about the new Ae Forest District plan which spans over a fifteen year period.
Bill Meadows, Forest District Manager for Ae District said:
"When the first Forestry Commission foresters came to the region in the mid 1900s, they would have had no idea that the trees being planted would become such an important part of Dumfries & Galloway’s culture, environment and economy. Today, the national forest estate in south west Scotland not only supplies a large proportion of Scotland’s sustainable quality timber, but is now balanced by other objectives including conservation, landscape, recreation, tourism and rural development.
“Sustainable forest management recognises the need to link the social, economic and environmental values of forestry, based on good evidence and through effective engagement with people. At its simplest, it means making sure that today’s woodlands are still being properly managed, with the same or better benefits for future generations. The key issues that we have identified locally are quality recreation provision, habitat restoration, and community participation.
“We’re keen to share our vision with those living and working in the area, and would welcome constructive feedback. Whether you walk your dog in Heathhall Forest, work in the forestry industry, or enjoy riding the 7stanes trails in Dalbeattie Forest, everyone is invited to come along and chat to our staff”.
The drop-in sessions will be open between 3pm and 6pm at the following venues:
- Lockerbie (Town Hall, Community Centre) on Tuesday 27th May;
- Dalbeattie (Town Hall, Lesser Hall) on Wednesday 28th May;
- Dumfries (Lochthorn Library) on Friday 30th May.
