Cosmic journey in Chopwell Wood

Night owls are being invited to spend a night with the stars in Chopwell Wood, near High Spen, Gateshead.

The Forestry Commission is staging a Nightwatch in the 340 hectare (900 acre) wood on Saturday 6 March, offering novices a tour of the heavens and spectacular glimpses of heavenly wonders through powerful telescopes.

The event takes place on Saturday 6 March, but you’ll need to book to take part on 01434 220242.

Ranger Leanne Shipley said:

“The nights this tiime of year can be chilly so you’ll need to wrap up warm, but the transparent skies above the wood are a wonderful reward, with stars sparkling like diamonds.”

The event starts at 8pm and the cost is £5 adults, £4 concessions and £14 for a family of four. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Bring warm clothing and binoculars if you have them.
