NEWS RELEASE No: 7815
STUNNING VIEWPOINT FOR GLENASHDALE
The popular Glenashdale forest walk, near to
Whiting Bay, now boasts a new viewpoint which gives spectacular views over the famous falls.
The original viewpoint was badly damaged in the Boxing day gales back in 1998, resulting in the whole area being considered unstable so no repairs could be carried out.
After detailed surveys and designs were undertaken by Forestry Civil Engineering staff, it was decided to build a brand new structure which would give amazing views looking directly into the pool at the bottom of the 140ft falls.
Local Commission staff joined with contractors John Thomson Construction Ltd to build the new viewpoint.
Andy Walker of Forestry Commission Scotland is based on Arran and is delighted with the outcome:
"The Glenashdale Falls walk is one of the most attractive and spectacular walks on the island and attracts over 25,000 visitors each year.
"It has been some time since the original viewpoint and surrounding area were destroyed, but it has been worth the wait as the new viewing platform gives breathtaking views. On a wild and windy day, when the burn is in full spate, you can feel the tingle of the spray on your face - very refreshing!
"The whole project has been a real team effort and we reckon we've now got a new viewpoint which will be a massive hit with locals and tourists."
Glenashdale fall forest walk is managed by Forestry Commission Scotland and is around 4km in length. The walk offers excellent viewpoints and not far from the falls is an iron age fort. Access to the walk is from the sea front at Whiting Bay.
