NEWS RELEASE No: 10887

HIGH OR LOW, IT'S ALL ON SHOW

A log-chomping giant and some spectacular tree top acrobatics will top the bill at this year’s New Forest Open Day.

Organisers of the event, on August 29, aim to showcase the extraordinary work that goes into managing one of the jewels in Britain’s natural crown. They also want to show people that Hampshire’s world famous woodlands and heathlands are there for absolutely everyone to enjoy.

The event, in Wilverley Plain inclosure, will feature experts from the Verderers, Forestry Commission and New Forest National Park Authority. Visitors will be able to watch a huge machine at work that can grab a one-tonne tree in its claw and fell, strip and chop it into logs in seconds.

High up above in the forest canopy, keepers will demonstrate how they pluck tiny raptor chicks from their precarious nests to ring them and record their numbers. And on the ground families will be able to try their hand at wild play.

Ranger Sally Mitchell, said: “There will be den building, treasure hunts and all sorts of activities for families. We think ‘hands-on’ play and maybe getting a bit messy is a great way for youngsters to learn about their environment and get some good healthy exercise. On show will be a New Forest pony and Verderers will be on hand to explain all about the management of these wonderful animals and the ancient traditions of the ‘commoners’ who own them. People will be able to trail-test ‘trampers’. These electrically-powered chairs are designed for people with mobility problems. They enable the user to travel miles pretty well anywhere in the forest.”

Planning and land management teams will also be on hand to answer questions on how they keep the interests of conservation, recreation and timber production in balance.
Refreshments made from local produce will be on sale. Ample car parking will be available. The event will run from 10.30am to 4pm. Entry is free.
