DOGGIE ORIENTEERING AT BENNACHIE!

Orienteering in Aberdeenshire’s forests will get another boost this week when Forestry Commission Scotland will be encouraging some four footed visitors to tackle a special orienteering event in Bennachie Forest.

The doggie orienteering day (Saturday 17 May) is a free event and is open to all breeds and to dogs over one year old - plus their owners!

The special session is one of a series of introductory events open to individuals and families that are interested in giving orienteering a try.

Mark Reeve Recreation Forester, Forestry Commission Scotland Aberdeenshire, said;
    "Our forests are regularly used by orienteering enthusiasts and the fantastic facilities in Bennachie forest make it one of the most popular locations.
    "We thought that Doggie Orienteering was a great way of encouraging people who might not usually consider trying orienteering to come along and give it a go.
    "It's an excellent way to combine a visit to the forest with some exercise and adventure and also adds a little extra twist to taking your dog out for a walk.
    “It will be a relaxed, fun environment ideal for beginners and novices - of the two and four footed variety - where people can learn about the sport. Trained coaches will be on hand to provide basic instruction as well as coaching on techniques, route planning and navigation.
    “It's about fun and you don’t have to be the fastest or the first to finish. They've been great days out in the past and I'm sure that we're going to get lots of people hooked on this challenging and rewarding activity.”

The doggie orienteering event will be held between 1.00am and 1.30pm. All dogs must be kept on a long lead - and flat collars are best.

Booking in advance is not required and anyone taking part should meet at the Bennachie Centre, near to Chapel of Garioch.
