WOODS WALKS AND WILDLIFE (WYRE)

APRIL in the Forestry Commission's Wyre Forest

The Forestry Commission organises hundreds of events each year and welcomes visitors all year round. Next month’s events programme in Wyre Forest offers something to interest adults and children alike.

Walk in the Woods
Wednesday, April 2.
Enjoy the natural wonders of spring by joining a leisurely stroll through Wyre Forest. Meet at the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre, at 10am, for coffee. The walk will last about two hours. Cost: £3 per person (excluding refreshments). No booking required.

Forest Friends
Every Thursday, April 3, 10, 17 and 24.
This is a great chance for pre-school children and their parents or carers to have fun in Wyre Forest. There will be a different activity each week. This could be a craft workshop, a wildlife-themed game, or a pushchair-friendly walk. Meet at the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre, at 10am. The activity lasts about an hour. Cost: £3 per family. No advance booking required.

Stride and Stroll Health Walks
Sundays and Tuesdays, April 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29.
Trained leaders will be guiding walkers through the beautiful scenery of Wyre Forest. These walks are ideal for people wanting improved fitness, a healthier lifestyle and enjoyment from exercise. The health walks will continue throughout the year. Meet at the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre, at 11am. The walks are free. All abilities are welcome. There is no need to book.

Arts and Crafts for Children
Tuesday, April 15.
Youngsters are being invited to make their very own paper in Wyre Forest. The art involves shredding recycled paper, soaking it in water and pressing it. Flowers and leaves are added during the final stage for a unique decorative effect. 2pm-4pm. Meet at Wyre Forest Discovery Centre. Cost: £3.50 per child. Suitable for five to 11 year olds. Advance booking is essential.

Scavenger Scramble and Easter Egg Hunt
Good Friday, April 18.
Seasonal treats will be up for grabs at Wyre Forest on Good Friday. Children can join an Easter egg hunt and look for ‘treasure’ with the help of a clue sheet. This event is ideal for all the family. 2pm-4pm. Meet at Wyre Forest Discovery Centre. Cost: £3.50 per child, free for adults. Suitable for five to 11 year olds. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Advance booking is essential.

Arts and Crafts for Adults
Saturday, April 19.
Try your hand at the craft of papermaking. Transform recycled paper into a piece of decorative art using petals, leaves and other natural resources found in Wyre Forest. 10am-4pm. Meet at Wyre Forest Discovery Centre. Cost: £30 per person. This event is for adults only. Advance booking is essential.

Mud Monster Mayhem
Tuesday, April 22.
Youngsters can come to Wyre Forest’s famous ‘Mud Monster Valley’ and make their own creepy creature to live there. Children will use the soft earth to make a scary sculpture which they will stick onto the trees. 2pm-4pm. Meet at Wyre Forest Discovery Centre. Cost: £3.50 per child. Greenwood Working
Friday, April 25.
This event will introduce children to the traditional craft of turning freshly cut ‘green’ wood at Wyre Forest. They will learn how to shape and decorate timber using an ancient tool called a pole lathe. 2pm-4pm. Meet at Wyre Forest Discovery Centre. Cost: £3.50 per child. Suitable for five to 11 year olds. Advance booking is essential.

Foresters at Work
Throughout April.
Conifers are being selectively thinned this month in the New Parks and Hawkbatch areas of Wyre Forest. Visitors should keep well clear of all forestry operations and follow the instructions on warning signs displayed around the work sites. However, waymarked walks will be unaffected and people are welcome to experience the scenic views along these paths.
