WALK BACK TO THE IRON AGE

Bury Ditches near Lydbury North is one of the best examples of an Iron Age hill fort in Britain and the Forestry Commission and partners have been working to find ways to unlock the secrets of this magnificent place for all its visitors.

Now it is your turn to help bring the past back to life as Area Forester Dennis Moir would like to rename the walks around the site with an iron age theme he explains;

“There are three waymarked walks of different lengths on the site at the moment, Withins Walk, Bury Ditches Walk and Sunny Hill Walk. We would like help in coming up with new, imaginative names in the sprit of the people who once lived and traded here. Bury Ditches is a really special place with 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside, it deserves such special treatment, it is a real jewel in Shropshire’s crown.”

If you have suggestions for snappy names for these walks please contact the Forestry Commission on 01889 586593 or write to The Recreation Ranger, West Midlands Forest District, Birches Valley, Lady Hill, Rugeley, Staffordshire, WS15 2UQ or email georgina.high@forestry.gsi.gov.uk

Shropshire County Council, The Shropshire Hills AONB and English Heritage have been working with the Forestry Commission on an interpretation plan for Bury Ditches, which will help visitors discover who lived there over 2000 years ago. The plan can be viewed on the Forestry Commission website www.forestry.gov.uk on the Bury Ditches and Costley Wood page.
