WILD MENU TREAT FOR BUSHCRAFT NOVICES!
If you’re pining for a return to nature then it’s time to grasp the nettle and head for Chopwell Woodland Park!
The Forestry Commission has joined forces with the Friends of Chopwell Wood to stage a “survival” themed spring forage on Sunday 4 May in the 900 acre ancient wood, near Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.
Bushcraft novices will spend a day amongst the trees, rooting out wild foods and learning how to prepare them using natural fire making techniques and rustic utensils.
Menu offerings could include delicacies like hawthorn leaves and other spring greens and nettle soup, possibly laced with a dash of wild garlic – all truly organic!
Forestry Commission Ranger Neil Taylor, who together with bushcraft expert Steve Charlton, will lead the event, explained:
“Our ancestors knew a thing or two about making ends meet and natural food lore was far more widely understood. But if you arm yourself with a bit of knowledge it’s amazing just how many foodstuffs could be staring you in the face. And what’s more, most are packed with goodness. We’ll be offering an in-depth introduction to Mother Nature’s pantry and showing the best way to cope with life in the wilderness.”
The event is for adults over 18 years old and runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm. The cost is £30 per person. Booking is required on 01388 488312. To find out more visit www.forestry.gov.uk/NorthEastEngland Sign language for the deaf or hard of hearing is available for this event by contacting Carole Fountain on 07761452440 (phone/text).
