National inventory of woodland and trees
Information on the size, distribution, composition and condition of woodlands is essential for developing and monitoring policies for the sustainable development of woodlands and the countryside. The Forestry Commission has been carrying out national woodland surveys since 1924. The latest National Inventory of Woodlands and Trees was completed in July 2000. The Inventory consists of two separate surveys: - The Main Woodland Survey covering woodlands of 2 hectares and over.
- The Survey of Small Woodland and Trees covering small woods, groups of trees, linear features and individual trees.
Survey results have been published as a series of Inventory Reports and wallcharts for Scotland, England and Wales. A summary report for Great Britain was published in August 2003. | Great Britain Inventory Report |
A report of the management and biodiversity data collected during the survey but not included with the main statistics on woodland area was published in 2008.
