Summary
Trees and urban greenspace deliver a range of environmental benefits to people living in urban areas. These include:
- Interception and storage of airborne pollutants
- Reduction of high summer temperatures
- Interception and storage of rainwater
- Noise abatement
- Higher house prices in neighbourhoods with more trees
- Improvements to the physical and mental health of local people.
Research objectives
This programme will help us to understand the contribution that trees make to urban environments. It will focus on three main areas:
- The resilience of current and planned urban tree stocks to climate change
- The role of urban trees in regulating temperatures
- Trees and water management in urban areas.
Funders and partners

This research is funded by the Forestry Commission Climate change and trees in the built environment programme.
Status
This research programme started in April 2011.
