Zac joined Forest Research in 2011 as a research worker based at our Exeter Field Station.

Current role

Research Worker, Technical Services Unit

Undertakes a wide range of field work in support of scientific staff within Forest Research and also contracts with external clients. Specific skills and experience include:

  • Undertaking inspections of suspect stands of larch to determine whether Phytophthora ramorum infection is present. Work includes identifying landowners and negotiating access
  • The establishment and maintenance of both field experiments using a wide range of tools and equipment including clearing saw and knapsack herbicide applicators
  • Layout of experimental plots for field trials
  • Forest mensuration: including use of vertex and data collection from Forestry Commission sample plots
  • Undertaking FMM4 / OGB4 stocking density assessments
  • Data collection using a range of assessment protocols including tree canopy, stem form, biomass and plant health assessments
  • Soil sampling
  • Tree health surveys: Pitch pine canker, Red Band Needle Blight, Pinewood Nematode
  • Use of ArcView GIS software and handheld GPS equipment (Garmin GPS 60CSx).
