Ian joined Forest Research in 2002 as a research worker based at our Alice Holt Field Station. Prior to this he studied for a BTEC First Diploma; Forestry & Countryside Management, at Guildford College: Merrist Wood.

Current role

Research Worker, Technical Services Unit

Undertaking a wide range of field work in support of scientific staff within Forest Research and also contracts with external clients. Specific skills and experience include:

  • The establishment and maintenance of both field and nursery experiments using a wide range of tools and equipment including chainsaw, clearing saw, knapsack herbicide applicators and mist blowers
  • Layout of experimental plots for field trials
  • Tree planting and direct seeding
  • Forest mensuration; Including use of vertex
  • Wide range of assessments including tree canopy, stem form, biomass and plant health assessments
  • Soil sampling
  • Herbicide applications (via knapsack) and follow up assessments as part of herbicide trials
  • Deer population surveys; Use of thermal imaging equipment
  • Squirrel index trapping
  • Tree health surveys: Pitch pine canker, Chestnut Blight & Oriental Gall Wasp, Red Band Needle Blight, Oak Processionary Moth (pheromone trapping), Phytophthora ramorum survey
  • Air spade excavation of tree roots for tree health investigations
  • Tree canopy assessments using hemispherical photography
  • Use of electronic data collection equipment: Allegros
  • Use of handheld GPS equipment (Garmin GPS 60CSx)
  • Operations using 4WD vehicles and agricultural tractors.
