Louise Sing joined Forest Research in 2002, where she has specialised in GIS, spatial data analysis, and Ecological Site Classification. She studied for a BA (Hons) in Geography at the University of Birmingham and an MSc in GIS and Remote Sensing at the University of Greenwich.

Current role

Spatial Scientist, PhD Student

Louise is currently undertaking a PhD in ecosystem services and forest management with the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh. She is supervised by Dr Marc Metzger and Dr James Paterson at the University of Edinburgh and Duncan Ray at Forest Research. This research is focused on the Lochaber Forest District, and will explore the use of ecosystem services for delivering evidence on the effects of alternative forest management and expansion strategies for a range of priority ecosystem services.

Current programmes

  • Land Use and Ecosystem Services group on ecosystem services and forest management research
  • SIMWOOD – Sustainable Innovative Mobilisation of Wood

Affiliations and achievements

  • Member of the Association for Geographic Information
  • Member of the International Association for Landscape Ecology

Research areas

  • Ecosystem services and forest management
  • Woodland expansion
  • Ecological Site Classification (ESC)
