Forest Research's network of field stations gives us the capacity to conduct field work on a GB basis. It also provides local contact and liaison between Forest Research and networks of regional Forestry Commission staff and partner organisations.
Through this network of field stations, the Technical Services Unit (TSU) establishes and maintains experiments, undertakes surveys and assessments for the science centres within Forest Research and on behalf of other customers both Forestry Commission and external clients.
Commercial service
TSU provide services that encompass:
- Environmental and subjective surveys
- Specialised tree breeding and nursery experiments
- Laying out, maintenance and measuring of experiments.
Research expertise
- Experiment management
- Ecological surveys
- Forest health
- Forest surveys
- Nurseries.
Organisation
Headed by Dr Helen McKay based at Forest Research’s Northern Research Station, the TSU is organized around 5 Field Stations each managed by a Field Station Manager responsible for the management of research workers and support staff based at these locations together with 6 associated Satellite Stations.
At Alice Holt and Northern Research Stations, TSU also provides staffing for the nursery facilities in support of the Forest Research Research Stations at these locations, although in common with the Field Station network, these specialist facilities are also able to provide services to external clients.
