10th to 12th September 2008
What was the event?
A timely conference on planning for an unpredictable future in the face of climate change. Suitable planting plans for public gardens will no doubt be dependent upon local conditions as well as the regional, national and global effects of a changing climate. Collating phenological data on cultivated plants in Britain and Ireland presents us with opportunities to consider possible future scenarios, and to plan accordingly.
Topics included:
- Climate-change projections and their implications
- Phenology records
- Water and drought tolerance
- Potentially invasive species
- Pests and diseases
- Soil fungi.
Richard Jinks of Forest Research presented "Tree collections and climate change: taking stock".
There was also a visit to Westonbirt National Arboretum covering:
- Effects of changes in rainfall patterns and other climatic conditions
- Flushing, flowering and fruit set
- Landscape planning and ideas for future planting
- Future of the collections.
