Hugh joined Forest Research in 2007. He previously worked at The National Forest Company, in private forestry consultancies and for local authorities. He gained his Ph.D. from Reading University in 1996. His research involved extensive fieldwork in Thetford Forest and used high resolution Thematic Mapper and Airbourne Thematic Mapper data. Associated work included leading on a World Bank consultancy project to investigate the availability of woodfuel for N’Djamena, Chad. Hugh also holds a M.Sc in Environmental Forestry (Bangor University), a B.A. (Hons) Geography (Exeter University) and a Diploma in Management (Derby Business School).
Current role
Head of Operations.
The Head of Operations leads the Operations Unit. The Unit comprises Human Resources, Finance IT, Communications and Business Development, with staff working at Forest Research offices and field stations throughout Great Britain. The Operations Unit provides the essential services and support for Forest Research. This work includes: corporate support; the recruitment and training of staff; managing Forest Research sites; provision of management information systems; audit; procurement; editing and publishing; organising knowledge exchange events and activities; seeking out and helping to secure external income; IT; and expertise to develop research based commercial opportunities.
