Improving methodologies for measuring stem-flow in forest plots

Aims

The aims of the project were to:

  • Design a method to measure stemflow in oak trees but could be adapted to other species
  • Compare the stemflow in different stands in terms of their diameter, position in relation to one another (dominant and submissive) and branching
  • Look at past papers and research into stemflow of oak trees and other species
  • Use data collected to complete accurate water budget for ‘Level II’ plot at Alice Holt.

Results

Ten stemflow collectors were installed at the Alice Holt Level II forest monitoring plot in a pilot study undertaken by Matthew Williams in 2002-3.
