Native Woodlands Survey for Scotland
The Native Woodlands Survey for Scotland (NWSS), commissioned by Forestry Commission Scotland, is the first survey of the full extent of the location, extent and condition of native woodlands in Scotland rather than a plot based or sample based survey.
Ten surveyors from Forest Research Technical Services Unit (TSU) are involved initially with numbers expected to increase in 2007. With a remit specific to native woodlands and a scope to survey the location, type, extent and condition of all native woodlands and plantation on ancient woodland sites (PAWS), the NWSS covers a different area and scope to the National Inventory of Woodlands and Trees (NIWT). Following on from the successful pilot study over the last year, the full NWSS started in October 2006.
