Norman Dandy studied for a Earth & Environmental Sciences degree at Anglia Polytechnic, followed by a Masters in Environmental Politics at Keele University. He has worked as a lecturer in social research methods and politics and, in 2005, completed a PhD on international conservation politics within the Politics department of the University of Leicester. He joined Forest Research in May 2006.

Current role

Research Scientist, Social and Economic Research Group, Centre for Human and Ecological Sciences

Norman works on a variety of research projects, mainly within the forest governance programme, currently focused on land management decision making processes, energy forestry and human-wildlife interactions.

Current programmes

Woodfuel – social and economic dimensions
Understanding the challenges of using trees, woods and forests in an effective woodfuel sector, how and why private woodlands owners produce woodfuel, what forms of partnerships are appropriate and the role of local communities. New research will investigate potential changes in community attachment to forest places and landscapes that may follow from increased use of biomass for energy.

Human dimensions of species management
Investigating the interaction of humans and wildlife in forests and the implications for management and policy.

Collaborative frameworks in land management: a case-study of wild deer in Britain
Conducting case-study research, through documentary, interview and focus-group research, into sustainable deer management in England, with a particular focus upon collaborative management and stakeholder engagement.

Management of roe deer in the peri-urban environment
Examining the interaction of roe deer with people in Scotland’s peri-urban environments.

Street trees: governance and social values
Identifying the social and cultural values of street trees and analyse the governance context in which decisions are made about their management.

Research areas

  • Landscape scale governance of natural resources
  • Land management and land use
  • Human-wildlife interactions and wildlife management
  • Renewable energy
  • Urban trees and wildlife.
