Gregory studied economics at Edinburgh university, writing a dissertation on the economy of Tristan da Cunha, and subsequently worked as an economist in Scotland, the Netherlands and France. He undertook a PhD at the University of Siena, Italy, completing a thesis entitled “Justice, Human Security and the Environment” while based at Darwin College, Cambridge. Before joining Forest Research he worked for Imperial College, London on the impact of electricity market reforms in developing countries on poverty and renewable energy.
