25^th to 26^th January 2007

What was the event?

This was the fourth in a series of meetings the Association of Applied Biologists has organised on vegetation management since 1992. There have been a number of significant changes since the previous meeting held in 2000. These include the publication of the first plant atlas in the British Isles for 40 years, a major Government commitment to halt biodiversity decline, a shift in emphasis towards more sustainable woodland management, and major changes in grant schemes to farmers and other landowners.

An increasing number of challenges face those involved with vegetation management. These include:

• Pressure from development and urbanisation
• Climate change
• The completion of the first tranche of Biodiversity Action Plans
• Eutrophication
• Water Framework Directive
• Public Service Agreement (PSA) target for all Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) to be in favourable condition.

The following Forest Research staff presented posters or giving talks:

• Alice Broome:
  Poster session (25^th Jan) – "Monitoring to measure the benefits of habitat management for Capercaillie"
  Giving talk (26^th Jan) – "Cows and trees: managing butterfly habitat in North West Scotland"
• Ralph Harmer:
  Giving talk (26^th Jan) – "Controlling bramble within an oak woodland using herbicides"
