Graham Bull joined the Forestry Commission Central Drawing Office (CDO) at Basingstoke in June 1974 as a Higher Grade Cartographic Draughtsman. The CDO was overseen at the time by Field Surveys, Forest Research at Alice Holt.

Project Leader, Woodland Inventory Group, Biometrics, Surveys and Statistics Division
Spatial Geographic Information (Forest Inventory)

Responsibilities include:

  • Development of National Inventory of Woodland Trees version 2 (NIWT2)
  • Deputy to Head of Unit
  • Responding to internal Forestry Commission or external enquiries
  • Providing advice relating to the Woodland Inventory, spatial data including the Ordnance Survey, or historic forest survey information
  • Supporting other Forest Research users of forestry related spatial data
  • GIS Development attending seminars, conferences and ESRI software user meetings.

Current programmes

National Inventory of Woodland and Trees
Project Leader:

  • Production of new woodland map based on use of digital imagery
  • OS MasterMap boundaries
  • Developing the sampling method and development of field data capture (hardware and software) from pilot to live systems
  • Investigating methods to assist in finding ownership of sample NIWT2 1ha plots
  • Developing the use of remote sensing data in NIWT2
  • Trialling the use of Orthorectified Radar Imagery, IKONOS and QUICKBIRD satellite data
  • Managing the analysis and publication of NIWT data
  • Participating in the consultation discussions with countries on NIWT2 proposals.
