Juan studied B.A. Geography with History at University of Valencia, Spain (1984-1989). He obtained an MSc in GIS in from the Department of Geography at Edinburgh University (1995-6). He gained a PhD from the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Sheffield (2010) on ‘An analysis of the consequences of stand variability in Sitka spruce plantations in Britain using a combination of airborne LiDAR analysis and models’.
Promoted to Higher Scientific Officer in 2002. Started research in Remote Sensing applications as project leader. Scientific Officer for the Forest Commission in Scotland.
From September 1996 up to 2002 his main activity was in the development of the ForestGALES program as programmer, modeller and GIS scientist. GIS Research Technician for the Forest Commission in Scotland within the EC- funded project: AAIR Project No 2392/8.9.1994/sk
From February 1995 to September 1996 he was working as a GIS scientist in early developments of the Ecological Site Classification with Dr. Graham Pyatt and the Stability project with Dr. Chris Quine.
- Development of cost-effective methods for capturing spatial data that can be subsequently integrated to any GIS-based forest management system
- Identification of mature technologies based on remote sensing ready for a business use and making recommendations for their operational use in the forest industry
- Identification of research priorities in line with the most fundamental management needs
- Coordinating our participation in different British and EU projects, through a research network, in partnership with universities and other research organisations in Britain and Europe. This aims to gain access to the latest advances in the use of remote sensing in forestry and the best way to transfer them to the forest industry

- The development of a method for automatic tree canopy identification using conventional aerial photography and an object-oriented analysis method in eCognition (Definiens Imaging GmbH, 2001; Trappenstreustraße 1, 80339 Muenchen, Germany).
