Policies and science as tools in implementing sustainable forest management

What was the event?

Sustainable forest management (SFM) requires a development of policy measures and management regimes that together lead to a desired goal by using the best scientific base as a foundation. However, there is a gap between policy implementation and existing knowledge, which needs to be bridged.

This conference was centred on Sustainable Forest Management, and its underpinning through research. It was part of an European Commission (EC) COST action (E25 - ENFORS) and in collaboration with Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) is seeking to influence the EC Framework 7 research programme.

The aims of the conference were:

• To bring together policy makers, stakeholders and scientific community
• To identify and analyse gaps between existing knowledge and policy implementation
• To review the knowledge base for criteria of sustainability
• To identify directions for future relevant research in support of sustainable forest management.

Paul Tabbush of Forest Research presented:

"Sustainable forest management, present knowledge and future improvements of criteria - the socio-cultural function"

Staff from Forestry Commission's North West England Forest District and from the National Trust in Ennerdale presented aspects of the Wild Ennerdale Partnership as a case study.
