Forestry Commission Scotland is the Lead Partner for the Scottish Woodant (Formica aquilonia), and with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) manage the Action Plan Steering group for wood ants (primarily Formica aquilonia, Formica lugubris and Formica exsecta).

Forest Research has been supporting the work of the group by collating woodant records and making them available as paper maps and Geographic Information System (GIS) shape files.

The following Foresty Commission information note provides guidance on woodland management for woodants and methods for managers of monitoring wood ant populations. Information was drawn from a report sponsored by SNH and was written by Jonathan Hughs (consultant) and Alice Broome.
