Bechsteins bat (Myotis bechsteinii) is a rare bat associated with deciduous woodland in the south of England.

Forest Research provided assistance in a Geographical Information System (GIS) based study to identify potential priority woodlands for Bechsteins bat in Britain. 370 woodlands have been selected and a follow-up field survey to assess the occupancy of the woodlands by Bechsteins bat is planned for 2005.

The study is led by Sussex University and co-funded by Joint Nature Conservation Council, Bat Conservation Trust and Mammals Trust UK.
