Janet studied Forestry at Aberdeen University, graduating in 1985. She then undertook a NERC CASE studentship in Soil Science at Aberdeen University and Merlewood Research Station (Institute of Terrestrial Ecology). After graduating with a PhD in 1989, she joined Forest Research as Forest Nutrition project leader. Janet left Forest Research in 1997 to work in Forestry Commission’s Silvan House, initially as Special Advisor for the physical environment and latterly, from 1999 to 2004, as part the Forest Enterprise GIS development team. She rejoined Forest Research in August 2004 as Head of the Technical Services Unit. In 2012 she changed jobs, moving back to a research role within Forest Research in the Centre for Forestry and Climate Change.

Current role

Research Officer, Centre for Forestry and Climate Change

Janet works in Mike Perk’s team in the Managing forest carbon and greenhouse gas balances programme. Currently her particular role is to look at the effects of stump harvesting on site carbon dynamics, and particularly the effects such disturbance has on greenhouse gas emissions.
