Finding alternative pesticide to control Hylobius abietis (Large Pine Weevil)

Hylobius damage to transplantsOn behalf of the forest industry, Technical Services Unit (TSU) worked closely with Forest Research entomologists to undertake trials of insecticides aimed at protecting conifers from damage by Hyloius abietis (Large Pine Weevil).

These trials tested the efficacy and phytotoxicity of Alphaguard 100 EC in large-scale use throughout the UK. The objective was to locate an alternative to Permethrin, for which approval was withdrawn in December 2003.

To gain approval from the UK Pesticides Safety Directorate, we have supported the entomology team in the production of the following;

  • Individual trial reports (Internal and external referees)
  • Biological Dossiers & support for companies
  • Liaison with companies, HSE, PSD & Forest industry
  • Co-development of treatment systems
  • Approvals for products
  • Comparative efficacy & costings for systems
  • Seminars
  • Information notes & trade journal articles
  • Weevil website
