Glossary - R

Rack: Route created during thinning or felling operations for the timber extraction machinery to travel into and out of the forest. Often a rack is made by removing one or two rows of trees.
Regeneration: The production of a new crop by artificial or natural regeneration. See Natural regeneration.
Respiration: The release into the atmosphere of carbon dioxide formed in a plant or animal where ener is released from stored foods: in plants the reverse of photosynthesis.
Restocking: The planting of an area after a tree crop has been removed.
Restocking: The replanting of an area after trees are removed.
Ride: Un-surfaced unplanted route through plantations used for access, demarcation, extraction and shooting.
Ring barking: Cutting round the bark and destroying the cells carrying the tree's food. Also called Girdling.
Ripping: A form of ground cultivation where a long tine breaks into the subsoil. Used to break up ironpan soils.
Root hairs: Tips of young roots through which water and mineral salts are absorbed from soil.
Root stock: Roots on which desirable grafts are grown.
Rootplate: The shallow layer of radially arranged roots revealed when a tree has blown over.
Rotation: Period between planting and harvesting.
Roundwood: Logs and small branches (small roundwood)
