Practical conservation work days  

Grizedale Volunteer DaysWe have put together what we hope is a varied and exciting programme of practical sessions for the coming months, working in different areas on lots of different tasks so hopefully there is something to interest everyone! 

Please note that work days may have different meeting points.

Thursday 2 February
Meet at Rangers office at 10am
Cutting back conifer regeneration from the edges of the forest road at Beckstones.  This is part of a partnership project with the Environment Agency who will be using the trees we fell as part of their flood defence work in Keswick. There will be an opportunity for volunteers taking part in this work to visit the flood defence work to see how the trees are used.

Meet at Rangers office at 10am
We will be continuing replanting the area around Masmill Car Park where tree felling took place last winter.  This will be planted with a mixture of hardy broadleaf trees that will provide beautiful autumn colour. We’ll meet at the rangers’ office and travel to Masmill together.

Thursday 30 March
Meet at Rangers Office at 10am
We carry out regular inspections of all the walking trails at Whinlatter and Dodd wood, to check conditions of the trails and highlight any maintenance or tree surgery work that needs to be carried out.  We are looking for some volunteers that might like to help with these inspections. We’ll hold a training session on the 30 March to explain everything you need to know and what would be expected.  After the training it will be a very flexible task that can be done whenever you have some spare time.

You're very welcome to drop in to these sessions but if you haven't been to one before please give us a call at Whinlatter, 017687 78127, so we can get a few details from you and let you know what to expect on the day.

Tools & gloves will be provided but please wear sturdy foorwear and bring waterproofs and refreshments.

Tools and gloves provided but wear sturdy footwear and bring waterproofs and refreshments.

Booking not essential but it is really helpful if you can let us know you are coming, so we can get the right amount of work and tools prepared.

What? Osprey Project VolunteersMale osprey
We are very hopeful that we’ll soon be seeing the Ospreys taking up residence again on the nest at Bassenthwaite.  The birds usually return towards the end of March or early April.  We’re now recruiting volunteers to help out at the outdoor viewing areas at Dodd Wood or in the Visitor Centre at Whinlatter to welcome visitors, provide information and assist visitors with viewing of the birds and their nest. 
When?  Throughout the osprey nesting season, from 1st April to 2nd September
Where?  Dodd Wood and Whinlatter Visitor Centre.
