South England Forest District manages some 48,000 hectares of the public forest estate across West Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Isle of White, Dorset and South Wiltshire. All our woods and forests are different, but many are open and accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They provide amazing classrooms without walls for families, schools and learners of all ages.
Learning opportunities currently available in this area include:
- Ranger led or self-led pre-school, school and college visits, and activities for non-education groups at: Queen Elizabeth Country Park, and Moors Valley Country Park, Dorset Alice Holt Forest, Hampshire
- Events programmes including events for children, families and adults at Alice Holt Forest and The New Forest Queen Elizabeth Country Park and Moors Valley Country Park
To find out more about these activities, or about other learning opportunities closer to where you are, please contact the learning team:

Are you a learning provider? If you are a learning provider and are interested in developing your business in one of our forests, for example a Forest School, please talk to us about your plans by contacting us.
How to prepare for a visit
If you are a school or group visiting one of our woods we have a number of activities, including an introductory slide show and a sample risk assessment, to help you plan your visit, follow this link for more information.
We have created some great downloadable lesson plans to be used in the forest, click here to find out more. They relate to the new national curriculum, but are just as appropriate for non-education groups, such as Brownies and Cubs.
