Managing Forest Roads

Forest Roads are an integral and vital part of our forests and they provide many benefits:

  • timber haulage
  • access to harvesting sites and facilities
  • environmental corridors
  • links to other areas
  • management access
  • open spaces
  • public access
  • recreation
  • wildlife habitats

The Forestry Commission works to provide, protect and maintain its forest roads through good management and practice.  The aim of this booklet is therefore to guide owners and users of Forestry Commission roads on the best ways of doing this. The booklet does not tell Forestry Commission staff how to build roads, instead it details the best ways to keep the roads and look after them.
