Timber haulage is critical to the competitiveness of the forest industry in Great Britain. Haulage can account for more than 50% of the production cost of timber delivered to the processor. Using rail and sea transport (integrated systems) can lead to greater efficiency (where they are available) as well as reducing the burden on the public road network.
It is essential that the Forestry Commission and it’s staff has a clear understanding of the full range of transport options available, and play a role in encouraging innovation to obtain the best, most efficient system of haulage. The aim of this booklet is therefore to help Forestry Commission staff understand the transport options and the related responsibilities in order to successfully manage timber haulage operations.
