The London Trees and Woodlands Standard Costs

The Forestry Commission produces Standard Costs for all its grant schemes to help in the administration and allocating of funding through these schemes. The London Trees and Woodlands Standard Costs were first produced in July 2006 and are subject to index linked updates annually. They were last revised in April 2009.

They are intended as a guide only and represent the level of funding the Forestry Commission considers it appropriate to provide in support of any given project, although this may vary within individual schemes for various reasons. Their use by applicants in the preparation of grant bids is considered essential.

In the calculation of the grant bids, applicants are expected to provide breakdowns of project costings, listing the individual Standard Cost references and how these are put together to result in an aggregated cost for each operation.

Examples:

The aggregated cost for planting a tree in a paved street in Inner London is made up of the following components:

1. Supply standard tree 14cm-16cm- Ref: E8= £138.50

2. Plant tree in paved area- Ref: E9b= £81.0

3. Supply light weight steel mesh tree guard-Ref: E20=£25.00

3. Undertake watering, weeding and stake/tie check- Ref: E14x14 visits per season=£151.12

Total Cost of E8+E9b+E20+E14(14)= £395.62

The aggregated cost for planting a tree in a grass verge (without a tree guard) in Outer London is made up of the following components:

1. Supply standard tree 14cm-16cm-Ref: E8= £133.00

2. Plant tree in grass verge-Ref: E11b= £60.00

3. Undertake watering, weeding and stake/tie check-Ref: E14x14 visits per season=£128.80

Total Cost of E8+E9b+E14(14)= £321.80

The above examples are illustrative and actual site components may vary and include references for extra works such as trial pits for utility services, heavy duty tree guards or planting in an alternate hard surface such as concrete or tarmac.

When making any application for the grant a list of streets will be required and applicants should provide the indicative Standard Cost references for the type of street surface and tree planting expected on a street by street basis.
