Wild Autumn in Galloway
Our video highlights some of the fantastic wildlife you can see in the Galloway area in Autumn.

We are fortunate to have many wonderful species of wildlife on our doorstep here in Galloway.
If you’re lucky, patient and time it right, you too could see Red Squirrels, Black Grouse, Red Deer, Otter and Nightjar (to name but a few) - but probably not all in the same day!
Sometimes we even make it easy for you to have close encounters with amazing creatures:
Wild goat park
Our Wild Goat Park is a great place to start. There’s plenty of access, with a car park and a number of road side pull-ins to make viewing this ancient breed really easy.
With picnic tables in the car park you could stop and have your lunch in their company, although they are on a strict diet, so despite their cute looks, please don’t share your picnic with them!

Red deer range
Just along the road from the Goat Park is the Red Deer Range where you can meet and greet our largest land mammal.

Deer Range guided walks
Enjoy a guided walk with our knowledgeable Wildlife Rangers from June – September, then come back in October for the Roaring Stags event. At that time of the year the stags are looking even more handsome but they have one thing on their mind, and that’s being top Deer!

Black Grouse
With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and in partnership with the RSPB and Scottish Natural Heritage, we have been able to create an area within the Galloway Forest Park to view these magnificent birds.
A viewing platform and some interpretation panels have been installed along the Carrick forest drive which allow visitors to discover more about the grouse - and hopefully watch them too.
When to go
The best time to be there is early in the morning. When at the viewing platform keep low, quiet and try not to make any sudden movements. This should heighten your chances of catching a glimpse of this rare bird. Wrap up warm and be prepared to wait.
Please keep to the platform; wandering off from this point to get a better view will cause disturbance and potentially cause the grouse stress.
There is a small parking place, and a short trail leads you to the viewing platform.
