HLFC Vehicle Access Charges Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – June 08

Why do I have to pay to park?

The cost of running High Lodge is considerable.  The contribution customers make helps us to build and maintain the facilities, which in turn allows us to provide catering on site, recycle the refuse,  stage concerts and provide educational visits for schools.

Currently, the recently installed barrier system, is the most cost effective way of raising income to support the site.   Strictly speaking customers aren’t asked to pay for parking, but  to access the site by vehicle (see terms and conditions).

Accessing the site by cycle, foot, motorcycle or the local Brecks bus is free.

What do I get for my money?                                                                                                                   Vehicle access charge, High Lodge Forest Centre.

  • Access to over 50 pieces of play equipment
  • Use of the Forest Drive to access the site
  • 24 hr toilets
  • 34 miles of cycle trails
  • 10 miles of walking trails
  • All ability facilities
  • Ranger service – first aid/lost children etc
  • Access to 10, 000 Ha of ‘free to roam’ Forest
  • Picnic facilities
  • Car Parks
  • Orienteering trail
  • Access to Bike Art and Go-Ape!

I’m happy to pay for vehicle access but I don’t think the Forestry Commission puts enough money into facilities?

The cost of running High Lodge last year was nearly £2 million and a further £300,000 was invested in site infrastructure. All of the facilities and services on offer are expensive to install, run and maintain. For example the pyramid slide installed in 2007 cost over £70,000.

Despite the sums already involved we are continually seeking additional funding to improve the facilities further, currently we are focusing on the cycle trail network and are developing plans that will see significant improvements over the coming years.

Why does the tariff jump from £2 to £6 so quickly?

We’ve introduced the new tariff of £2 in response to customer demand for cheaper short-term access to the site.  The majority of High Lodge Customers stay on site for less than 4 hours and their charge remains frozen at 2007 prices.  The new charge for over 4 hours tariff has been introduced to reflect the additional use made of the site for customers staying longer than average.

Why do you not offer concessions for blue badge holders?

We believe that the current tariff already provides outstanding value for money for all and holding a blue badge does not mean that a customer cannot afford to pay for their visit.

Why is it cheaper to visit the site weekdays in the winter?

We are trying to encourage customers to use the site during the poorer weather and shorter days. The forest walks will remain varied and interesting but some of the facilities such as the play equipment may be less useable when it is wet or cold. This is reflected in the charges. Encouraging more visitors on site allows the Café and shop to stay open and also increases the money we have to spend on maintaining and improving High Lodge.

Are there any cheaper ways to access the site?

Yes.  An annual season ticket works out at 80p per visit if you visit the site on a weekly basis.  A four week pass card used daily for 28 days provides vehicle access to High Lodge for just 71p per visit.
