Breeding Raptors: Goshawk & Hobbys

Until August 31, the RSPB, along with the New Forest National Park Authority, the Forestry Commission and Carnyx Wild, will be beaming live nestcam footage into the New Forest Reptile Centre, near Lyndhurst.

The project part of the RSPB's national Aren't birds brilliant! programme runs daily from 10 am to 4.30 pm. Entry to the Reptile Centre is free although donations for parking are welcome.

Visitors can gain an insight into two stunning birds of prey- the goshawk and the hobby.   During breeding season, goshawks perform incredible sky dances, and hunt with breathtaking agility. Hobbys are also lightning quick – weaving in and out of trees and turning at almost impossible speeds.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy incredible aerial displays from the centre’s viewing points, with experts on hand to answer any questions visitors may have.
Dan Parkinson, RSPB project manager, said: “Seeing these birds move through the air is something everyone should experience."

Mr Parkinson added: “These birds are part of the rich and special wildlife of the Forest, something we are at pains to protect. We will be helping visitors ensure their presence causes the least disruption to nature possible. The great thing about the project is that you don’t even have to come to the forest at all - anyone with internet access can see these inspiring creatures first-hand, everyday on our website.”
