Forest experience

The Forest Experience course has been developed to give the opportunity for young people to spend time in the woods, learning survival techniques and developing a wide range of practical and personal skills. The course is currently being offered at Sherwood Pines Forest Park. The course offers an alternative to school or youth groups for young people aged 11 – 18, in particular those with challenging behavior, those at risk of offending or truanting or those who struggle in formal education or training. Forest Experience Activity Days can also be offered to other groups including Scout and Guide groups. The course comprises 6 day-long sessions in the woods. A trial day is also available either as an initial taster or as a stand alone activity. You will learn a wide range of skills such as constructing shelters, animal tracking, safe tool use and even cooking on an open fire. Each session is hands on and aims to develop co-operation and communication skills, whilst improving confidence and self-esteem. We will work with you to create sessions that meet your requirements. ‘Forest Experience’ has been designed to give young people skills and confidence. To aid this, we have worked with the Open College Network (OCN) to design a set of 3 OCN accredited local modules which can be worked towards during the course to give qualifications at the end. It is not necessary for ‘Forest Experience’ participants to work for these qualifications but they are available if appropriate. A copy of the full programme and information on prices is available on request. Please e-mail the Education Rangers or contact the Sherwood Forest District Office for more information.
