Paying by phone for car parking trial.
As part of encouraging more visitors, we provide car parking at many sites, some of which we charge for. From 20 June 2008 we will be running a pilot scheme in two areas of England to test a new system for paying to park. The payments will be made by phone, either mobile or landline, by calling or texting details to the trial's operators, Verrus. The system avoids the need for ticket machines and other infrastructure which are damaging to the forest environment. You will initially need to register your details [external site], but once registered, subsequent payments will be quick and easy. In areas of weak mobile phone coverage or if you don't have a mobile phone, you can pay when you return home by ringing 0844 844 9997. After midnight of the day of your visit, payments cannot be made by text but they can still be made by calling 01604 625 625. You will need to know the site number (PDF 14kb) of the car park you used when calling. We currently have a mixture of charged and free parking across England with the scale of charges reflecting the level of visitor facilities and services provided at a site. As part of the pilot scheme we will be introducing car parking charges at some sites where parking was previously free or where charging had been suspended. Explanatory leaflets will be available from car parks and local forestry offices at trial sites. Trial sites will have information signs clearly indicating the presence of the new system. How it works [external site]. By offering a flexible payment scheme and eliminating the need for small change, we hope this new system will benefit everybody. Income from car parking is used to benefit the woodlands local to the car park. Where they already exist, season tickets and pay and display facilities will continue to be available during the trial.
