Training covered:

  • The Wood Fuel Resource – how much is available?
  • Modern day conversion of wood to heat
  • Woodfuel processing techniques
  • How you can benefit from Wood Fuel Standards
  • How to develop suitable business models

18 - 20 September 2009 - Weald Woodfair  - Woodfuel -Fuel for the Future? - Workshop

The counties of the south east are the most wooded in England and have historically
provided fuel for homes and industry. In a world where we need to explore a range
of alternatives to fossil fuels wood offers several benefits:

  • Wood is carbon efficient - growing trees absorb carbon, when we burn wood
    we release that carbon, which is then re-absorbed as new trees grow;
  • As long as woodlands are sustainably managed, woodfuel is a renewable
    source of energy;
  • In substituting for fossil fuels we help mitigate climate change;
  • Sensitively managed woods provide a more diverse habitat for our native plants
    and animals; and
  • it can be sourced locally, creating and supporting jobs.

A series of short presentations were given at this event and some of these can be found below:

Woodfuel Strategy for England

The Forestry Commission’s Woodfuel Strategy for England, has been launched by the Biodiversity Minister Barry Gardiner. The aim of the Strategy is to bring an additional two million tonnes (Mt) of wood into the market, annually, by 2020 saving 400,000 tonnes of carbon every year – the equivalent of 3.6 million barrels of crude oil and enough to supply 250,000 homes with energy. To achieve this target we will be focusing our efforts on the potential wood resource available in the 60% of English woodlands that are currently under-managed.

19th March 2007 - Launch of "An analysis of accessible natural greenspace provision in the South East" - A study produced for the South East AONB's Woodlands Programme, into the provision of accessible natural greenspace in the South East.
