Woodfuel

South East England is England’s most wooded region, with a substantial hardwood resource from our broadleaved woodlands. Many of these woodlands are currently undermanaged and the potential to develop the wood fuel market is a great opportunity to bring these back into management.

Wood and other sources of biomass have an important contribution to make to our future energy needs:

  • Climate change is a reality and using wood fuel will help reduce our reliance on burning fossil fuels which contributes to the process of global warming
  • New markets for wood fuel will help to create and maintain rural jobs as well as contribute to the sustainable management of our Woodfuelwoodlands

The Forestry Commission is currently working with the main players in the wood fuel sector in the South East to develop a costed action plan to help deliver c 500000m3 to the wood fuel market in the South East. This is part of the Government’s response to the Biomass Task Force.  The Forestry Commission is also helping to develop and secure the wood fuel supply chain through its work as a member of the South East Sustainable Energy Partnership.
