Forest School

What is a Forest School?

"forest schools is an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning"

Children at a Forest School session A Forest School is a secure area of woodland, which acts as an outdoor classroom where people can explore, investigate and discover the natural environment.  They offer children, young people and adults regular opportunities to learn social, physical and educational skills while encouraging an appreciation and understanding of the environment.

They also provide a valuable teaching tool for a large number of curriculum subjects and are a good way to support and enrich the learning process over a wide range of subjects.

Programmes run throughout the year in a woodland environment, taking place in all weathers (except for high winds).  Children use full sized tools, learn boundaries of behaviour; both physical and social, and grow in confidence, self esteem and motivation.

The Forestry Commission West Midlands district has 6 qualified Level 3 leaders successfully running Forest School sessions at both Cannock and Wyre forests.
