EIA's seeking Consent

Relevant projects seeking consent in South East England

The following projects are currently seeking the Forestry Commission’s consent:

Broadwater Warren, near Tunbridge Wells (EIA 019900339)A forest design plan

The RSPB has recently bought approximately 180ha of woodland located to the south of Tunbridge Wells. Their objective is to enhance the sites ecological value to birds, particularly those species which require permanent heathland.

At present the site comprises conifer plantations with a smaller proportion of broadleaves.  The age of the trees varies from 5 years to mature woodland.  Their outline proposals seek to convert approximately 65% of the site to permanent heathland (as coloured purple on the map 1 below). The remainder of the site (coloured green) will remain as woodland with a proportion of the conifers being replaced with native broadleaves.

On 12 April 2007 the Forestry Commission informed the RSPB that the proposals are likely to have a significant impact on the environment and hence constitute a relevant project as defined by the above Regulations. As such the Forestry Commission’s consent will be required for the work.

The RSPB have been asked to prepare an Environmental Statement which will provide an objective assessment of the impacts of their proposals for submission to the Forestry Commission along with their formal proposals.
