Farm Woodland Schemes

The Forestry Commission administers three schemes that make annual payments to farmers to compensate for the agricultural income foregone as a result of planting woodlands.


Farm Woodland Scheme (FWS)
This scheme is closed to new applicants. Existing agreements will however, continue until their expiry date.

Farm Woodland Premium Scheme (FWPS) - part of WGS mark II & III

Farm Woodland Payments (FWP) is part of Woodland Creation Grant, contained within England Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS). This replaces the Woodland Grant Scheme - Farm Woodland Premium Scheme and The Farm Woodland Scheme. EWGS combines Woodland Creation Grants and Farm Woodland Payments in a single scheme.

2008 Annual Payments for Farm Woodland Schemes
The Forestry Commission received confirmation from the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) that the annual Farm Woodland Scheme payments (to include FWS, FWPS and FWP) could commence from 22nd October 2008 under new EU regulations. Details of how payments are being made can be found in this section.

Customer and Land Registration
From April 2008, applicants claiming for Farm Woodland Payments under EWGS must be registered on the Customer Register (CR) and the land on the Rural Land Register (RLR).
