The Value of Trees - Regional Forestry Strategy

In common with all the English Regions, Yorkshire and The Humber has developed a Regional Forestry Strategy to guide the future development and management of our tree and woodland resource. The process has been overseen by a Steering Group which is chaired by the Government Office and includes representatives from the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly, Yorkshire Forward, Natural England, the Environment Agency and the Forestry Commission. An active Regional Woodland Forum has also supported the process.

A Strategic Framework document was published under the title: "The Value of Trees in Our Changing Region" and was formally launched by the Forestry Commission’s Director England in York in July 2005. This document outlines the context, identifies the issues and details the agreed priorities for future actions across the region. The Strategic Framework will shape decisions about the regional tree and woodland resource through to the year 2020, with interim reviews scheduled to take place at approximately five yearly intervals during that period.

In January 2006 a set of Spatial Information Maps were published. These represent a suite of opportunity maps developed by The Environment Partnership (TEP) to provide an illustration of public benefit delivery for each of the key themes in the Strategy. These will be used to assist in priority setting and to guide future delivery of the Regional Forestry Strategy’s aims and objectives. The full report can be downloaded but, because this is a very large document, individual maps can also be accessed via the home page of the ‘Value of Trees’ website.

In November 2007, a comprehensive Delivery Plan was published. This sets out the processes that have been put in place to oversee the delivery of the strategy, and is supported by a comprehensive Action Plan and Performance Management Framework which have been published on the web.

The region has also launched a dedicated website – www.valueoftrees.org – to help promote delivery of the strategy and keep woodland forum members informed about news and developments.
