A Strategy for England's Trees, Woods and Forests

Defra published A Strategy for England's Trees, Woods and Forests (the ETWF Strategy) in June 2007. This is the Government’s renewed strategy for forestry in England.  A Delivery Plan for the ETWF Strategy was launched in December 2008, complemented by a more detailed list of actions.  In response to the ETWF Strategy, FC England has adopted a new suite of Performance Targets for CSR2007, covering the period 2008-2011, most of which require quantitative indicators to assess progress.

The first edition of the English Forestry Strategy was published in 1998. No indicators were developed at that time. The main targets were covered by sets of performance indicators for each CSR. It was also proposed that English data from the UK Indicators of Sustainable Forestry could be viewed as a supplementary set of indicators.

Ancient & Native Woodlands

An Ancient & Native Woodland Strategy for England Keepers of Time was published in June 2005. A draft set of indicators was prepared to link to the strategy.

England Biodiversity Strategy

Indicators for the England Biodiversity Strategy are updated regularly  They include indicators of woodland birds, woodland butterflies, and condition of woodland SSSIs.  The baseline assessment in 2003 also included, status of woodland BAP priority species and habitats, trends in woodland plant diversity, area of ancient woodland and public enjoyment of woodland.
