Education and learning

Children involved in activities on a ranger led walk in the forestCalling all teachers: do you want to do something different with your class? Why not get outside of the classroom and learn in the forest?

The education service we provide gives the opportunity to learn within a forest environment at the High Lodge Forest Centre. The Recreation team aims to offer a service that meets national curriculum, environmental and outdoor education principles.

  • Group visits to the forest can be ranger-led or self-led,
  • It is essential that all visits are booked in advance, even self-led.
  • Remember that the forest is a working forest and certain areas may be subject to restrictions at times.
  • It is essential that the team are aware of groups using the forest - the location and activities involved.

Ranger-led visits:

The team offer visits led by Forestry Commission Rangers throughout the year but these are only available Monday - Friday (in term times). Most ranger led sessions are concentrated during May, June and July when demand is at it's greatest.

  • These are 2 hours in duration. The times are set as 10:00 -12:00 and 13:00 -15:00.
  • The sessions must be pre-booked in advance.
  • All rangers are Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checked and are first aid trained.
  • The responsibility for the group remains with the group leaders at all times and includes the administration of first aid.
  • Groups are limited to a maximum of 30 children per ranger.

Cost: £100 (inclusive of Vehicle access charge) payable by cheque to 'Forestry Commission' when returning your signed booking form, prior to visit. A VAT receipt will then be issued. In the event of cancellation please give 14 days notice to receive a credit voucher for another visit date.  No refunds will be issued.

Ranger-led Activities

Self-led visits:

Groups are very welcome to visit the forest and lead their own activities at any time.  However group leaders may prefer to make use of the various activities available on site.  For all self-led visits pre-booking is essential with the Recreation Team.

Self-led activities available include:

Cost: Vehicle Access charges as applicable eg. Minibuses and Coaches (All day) - School terms £20 and School holidays £25.

  • A Squirrel Scamper pack (including a user friendly map, worksheets, crayon and a sticker in a sealed waterproof bag) is 80p each when ordered in advance or £1.50 each in the shop.
  • Forest Footsteps Programme - £20 per pack. Please call 01842 816031 for more details.
  • Orienteering maps are £1.50 each

Both Orienteering maps and Squirrel Scamper can be paid for and collected from the shop on the day of the visit.  When large numbers of maps are required they should be booked in advance.
