How to get to Culbin

Culbin is free to visit and is open all year round.  It's located along the Moray Firth coastline east of Nairn and west of Forres.  The main entrance (at Wellhill) is near Forres and well signposted from the A96.

The Culbin map (PDF 3.5Mb) shows all the access points for the forest and foreshore.

The OS Grid Reference for Wellhill is NH997615.

If you're coming from further afield, you might like to view a map of where Culbin is in Scotland. This map also shows the location of Wellhill. (Link to an external site).

Where should I start?

  • Head for the main car park at Wellhill if you’re a first time visitor, coming to walk or cycle, or to look at forest birdlife.
  • If you're coming to horse ride, head for Cloddymoss. Please note: sled dog racing is taking place from the Cloddymoss entrance to Culbin on Saturday 7th - Sunday 8th and Saturday 14th - Sunday 15th February 09.  Apologies for any inconvenience this causes.
  • For coastal birdwatching head to Nairn East Beach.

So how do I get there?

By car:

Leave the A96 Inverness – Aberdeen road at Brodie, following the signs to Culbin.

By train:

The nearest station is Forres, three miles from Wellhill on foot, or a ten minute taxi-ride.  Check train times on the Scotrail website.

By bus:

Local buses run from Forres to Dyke and Kintessack, villages close to Wellhill, on schooldays, Tuesdays and Fridays.  Just ask the driver or any other passenger for advice on the best place to walk from.  Check up-to-date local bus services at http://www.moray.gov.uk/downloads/file39769.pdf

By bike:

National Cycle Route 1 runs through the south side of Culbin, around 800 metres from the main car park at Wellhill.  For more details see the sustrans website.
